The Irish Sports Council
Functions of the Sports Council:
The Council's responsibilities include:
- The administration of the Grants Scheme for National Governing Bodies of Sport;
- The operation of the National Sports Anti-Doping Programme which involves testing, education and research;
- Formulation and implementation of a High Performance Strategy for Sport including the administration of the International Carding Scheme which supports high performance athletes and emerging talent in Ireland;
- The administration of the Sport and Recreation for Young People Scheme run by Vocational Education Committees;
- Co-ordination of the development of the National Waymarked Ways;
- Relations with the National Coaching and Training Centre (NCTC) and the Olympic Council of Ireland;
- Advising the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation in relation to sport and physical recreation issues.
- Liaison with the Department of Tourism, Sport and Recreation; and
- Relations with the Sports Council for Northern Ireland.
Services provided to the public:
Applications are invited on an annual basis from recognised sports organisations for funding towards the development of sport in Ireland, including:
- Grant-aid towards organisation development, including coaching and international competition; and
- Grant-aid for specific local and national sports programmes run by Vocational Education Committees and certain other bodies involved with recreational sports programmes.
