National Sports Campus Development Authority

The National Sports Campus Development Authority (NSCDA) has been established on a statutory basis to succeed in function and responsibility Campus and Stadium Ireland Development Company Ltd. (CSID) with effect from 1 January 2007. The Authority will continue the role of overseeing the planning and development of the sports campus at Abbotstown. In addition, one of the tasks of the new authority will be to identify and prioritise the next phase of the development, in respect of which €30m is being set aside in the National Development Plan 2007-2013.

Sports Campus at Abbotstown

In November 2005, the Government gave its assent to the commencement of Phase 1 of the development of a campus of sports facilities at Abbotstown. The estimated cost of this phase is €119m, with a 4 to 5 year delivery schedule. Phase 1 will provide for the development of modern facilities including pitches and support facilities for the three major field sports, rugby, soccer and Gaelic games, with shared core facilities including accommodation, fitness area, medical and gym facilities. Facilities will also be provided to cater for over 30 indoor sports including badminton, basketball, bowling, boxing, judo, and table tennis. Community playing pitches and support facilities are also included in this plan.

National Aquatic Centre

The first element of the Sports Campus project, the National Aquatic, opened in 2003 and successfully hosted the swimming events in the 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games
