Success in AXA
Dublin Piano Competition is undoubtedly a highlight of any young pianist's
career – Dr. Mansergh
Dr Martin Mansergh TD Minister of State with special responsibility for the Arts attended as Guest of Honour at the AXA sponsored Dublin International Piano Competition Gala Dinner in Dublin Castle this evening (Wednesday 13th May, 2009). The AXA Dublin International Piano Competition is a vital contributor to championing and advancing the musical education and experience of young pianists.
Speaking at
the event Dr. Mansergh said: "This competition's world-renowned reputation
has been growing since its inception in 1998. The combination of the generous
financial package from the AXA group with a guaranteed prestigious list of
world-wide engagements with major orchestras has once again attracted in the
region of 40 excellent participants to Dublin from all corners of the globe, it
now ranks quite rightly amongst the most important international piano
competitions."
Dr. Mansergh also said: "Volunteers are central to the development of the competition and their input cannot be overlooked or overestimated. From the host families for the competitors to the drivers and the organising committee, this competition brings a musical community together and defines what we can achieve as a society for a greater purpose. Winning any competition is something of which to be proud, but winning the AXA Dublin Piano Competition is undoubtedly not only a highlight of any young pianist's career; but equally, a launching pad for a successful career, as any of the previous winners such as Philippe Cassard, Romaine Descharmes or Max Levinson can testify."
The Minister
also thanked the business community for its sponsorship of the arts and encouraged others in the
business world to explore the options available for such engagement. "I
see such engagements as complementing and consolidating the work being
undertaken by Government, directly and through the Arts Council whose
commitment is to the conservation, development and advancement of the arts in
this country. The substantial funding provided by Government in recent years to
the Council has effectively transformed and consolidated the arts."
concluded Dr. Mansergh.
Dr. Mansergh thanked Chairman Margaret Downes, Ann Fuller for administrating the event, Professor John O'Conor, Artistic Director and Professor at the Royal Irish College of Music, John O'Neill from AXA and Laurie Cearr for their respective roles in creating and maintaining this international success for Ireland.
